Mirror Backing Paint

Mirror Backing Paint

Mirror backing paint, a colored film-forming material, is applied to the surface of silver mirrors to protect the silver layer from being corroded. Its purposes include preventing and delaying corrosion, and electrochemical functions. Since the 1960s, when silver mirror production began to evolve from roller coating to curtain coating automatic mass production, the cost of mirror backing paint material has accounted for 18% of the total cost (the second most costly material, followed by silver and chemical solution, which have accounted for 17%; the most costly material has been glass, which has accounted for 65%). As silver mirror backing paint is a niche market, there are only four manufacturers globally, and Grincoat is the only one in Asia.

Mirrors are generally classified into conventional copper mirrors and copper-free mirrors. Conventional copper mirrors are less environmentally friendly because they contain lead. Therefore, the production of copper-free mirrors has been growing gradually, while that of copper mirrors has been declining slowly. For Galvanic as well as copper-free mirrors, the mirror backing paint used on their backs is alkyd or acrylic resin. Two layers of mirror backing paint are required (one layer of base coat and one layer of top coat). In contrast, the epoxy resin mirror backing paint invented by Grincoat is a single-layer mirror backing paint, and its protection function and paint adhesion are far superior to those of alkyd and acrylic resin mirror backing paint. Epoxy resin mirror backing paint has become a major renovation in the mirror manufacturing industry due to significant improvements in the corrosion-resistance of mirrors and extension of the service life of mirrors.
